Biography
Dr. Hightower is an internal medicine physician in San Francisco, California. She is board certified by the National Board of Physician and Surgeons (NBPAS) from 2017 until present. She was also board certified under the American Board of Internal Medicine from 1992 through 2022.
She has special interests in nutrition and environmental contaminants and their impact on health, as well as interest in preventive and diagnostic medicine.
In 2000, her landmark study on mercury levels in patients in her San Francisco practice, subsequently published in Environmental Health Perspectives in 2002, lead to the current FDA recommendations on fish consumption. She subsequently published multiple scientific papers on the subject, has given numerous lectures, and is now considered a leading world’s authority on mercury as it pertains to health. Dr. Hightower is the author of Diagnosis Mercury: Money Politics and Poison, which sheds light on the history of this metal through time.
In 2017, Dr. Hightower published another landmark paper on vitamin D, and chronic myofascial pain and how they are inter-related. This peer reviewed scientific paper describes how magnesium deficiency is the key to low vitamin D and chronic pain, and together, those factors have an association with cancer, colon polyps, and tendon rupture. It also describes how drinking water that does not contain magnesium, contributes to magnesium deficiency.
